✊ Community rallies for Somali Minnesotans

November 25, 2025

Greetings, Twin Cities! We have a stuffed Tuesday show. We debated the best Thanksgiving sides and let you know where to find a meal if you don’t want to cook. With the help of Dr. Katie Loth and contributor Tane Danger, we also provide guidance on having considerate conversations at the dinner table. 🍽️ You gotta listen.

What the Cities Are Talking About

Over the weekend, President Trump called Minnesota a “hub of fraudulent money laundering” and blamed “Somali gangs” on Truth Social. He went on to say he was immediately ending Temporary Protection Status for Somali people in Minnesota. However, ending TPS for a country is up to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem (and it would apply across the U.S., not just here). Noem stopped at MSP Airport on Sunday and said DHS will reevaluate Somalia’s TPS designation. [FOX 9 / Star Tribune]

  • What is TPS? This status allows immigrants from countries that would be unsafe for them to return to stay in the U.S. for a temporary, but extendable, period of time. There are about 430 TPS beneficiaries from Somalia in Minnesota. [National Immigration Forum / Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota]
  • Community response: Hundreds of people packed Karmel Mall in South Minneapolis for a potluck in solidarity with the Somali community on Sunday. Trump’s threats have sparked panic among Somalis who worry families will be torn apart by the end of TPS protections. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said he’d sue if the Trump administration moves forward. [MPR News / Star Tribune]

“Code red”: Minneapolis city leaders are preparing for drastic cuts to federal housing funding, which could force thousands back on the street. The city has added 130 new shelter beds and invested more than $14 million, but politicians and service providers fear it’s not enough to make up for the shortfall. [Star Tribune]
