Your Twin Cities December Guide

We all know Minnesota summers are jam-packed, but between holidays, winter sports, and general merriment, I think December here is just as busy. The City Cast team put our noggins together to create a comprehensive guide on what to do, see, eat, and where to help this month. Take a listen! [🎧 City Cast Twin Cities]

  • What to watch: Jesus Christ Superstar is at the Ordway this month. This celebrated musical has been a stage staple since its groundbreaking premiere in 1971. Our contributor Denzel Belin says the show is “rock opera at its most rock opera,” and he’ll be taking in the show on Christmas Eve.
  • What to do: Strip down for World AIDS Day. The Red Undie Run encourages you to grab your red “briefs, bra, boxers, panties, jockstrap, or thong” and run a little over a mile in downtown Minneapolis on Saturday, December 6. This is The Aliveness Project’s largest annual fundraiser – they’re one of the state’s most active organizations providing HIV support and prevention.

Also Worth Your Time

An industry “born without any rules”: Minnesota could be the country’s model student for regulating hemp-derived THC – that is, if the federal government doesn’t ban it first. MinnPost’s Cleo Krecji reports how industry advocates and lawmakers have worked to create regulations from the ground up after legalization in 2018. [MinnPost]

Breweries up their game: Alcohol consumption is declining across the country, so taprooms are getting creative to bring in customers. Star Tribune’s Chris Riemenschneider reports they’re trying everything from hosting open-mic magic to yoga classes and jazz jams. [Star Tribune]

“Snow Days” ahead: Would it even be the holidays in the Twin Cities without The New Standards Holiday Show at the State Theatre? On today’s episode, John Munson tells Sean about participating in the upcoming shows and how his life has changed after experiencing a stroke. [🎧 City Cast Twin Cities]

Cycling Santa: A fleet of Santas will be delivering toys via bikes, not sleighs, through downtown Minneapolis this Saturday. Anyone can join; just dress for the occasion and bring a donation for the toy drive. [Santa Cycle Rampage MSP]

Headbangin’ safe space: Racket’s Natalie Marlin introduces us to Queer Ritual, which hosts shows featuring LGBTQ+ musicians with a heavy metal bent. They’re DIY to send as much of the ticket sales to mutual aid as possible. If you’re looking for an inclusive place to mosh, Queer Ritual’s Instagram says their next show is Saturday. [Racket]
