Hey Twin Cities! It’s Adam today. I hope you've had a relaxing post-holiday weekend and some time to decompress. If you didn't, maybe you can take some of that energy out at a community dodgeball game tonight? Read on for more great events happening around town this week.

These Cameras Track You Everywhere in the Twin Cities

We have over 300 automated licence plate reader cameras in the metro area that capture your license plate and location every time you pass them. Most of them are made by a company called Flock Safety, and the data they collect can be used to keep track of everywhere you go. Today's episode of City Cast Twin Cities revisits a conversation with ACLU-MN lawyer Alicia Granse about the legality and ethics of these cameras. [🎧 City Cast Twin Cities]

  • Opportunities for misuse: You wouldn't want a detailed record of everywhere you go to fall into the wrong hands. Activists are arguing that's already happening though – with police officers using Flock cameras to track their ex-girlfriends, find a woman who went out of state for an abortion, and share Flock data with ICE.
  • Who has access? Anyone with an internet connection and a web browser, according to recent reporting by Benn Jordan and 404 Media. Jordan shows that users can view not only license plate reader data, but also live surveillance camera feeds aimed at pedestrians, calling the vulnerability "Netflix for stalkers." [404 Media]
