ICE officer shoots and kills woman in South Minneapolis

Amid what ICE called “the largest immigration operation ever,” an ICE agent fatally shot a woman in her car Tuesday morning. MPD Chief O’Hara said at a press conference the woman was not the target of immigration enforcement. The victim’s mother identified her as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, and an immigrant advocacy group described her as an ICE observer. [Star Tribune / 🎧 City Cast Twin Cities]

  • DHS vs. witnesses: The woman was in her car near E. 34th St. and Portland Ave. Witnesses told City Cast producer Adam Sage the woman was trying to flee from ICE when she was shot. But the Department of Homeland Security spokesperson posted on X that the woman attempted to “run over” agents and the officer shot in self-defense. A witness captured video of the shooting. Warning: this video contains graphic content.
  • City leaders speak out: In response to the allegation that the officer shot in self-defense, Mayor Jacob Frey called it a “garbage narrative” at a press conference yesterday. He also said ICE should leave the city and state.
  • State response: At a press conference yesterday, Governor Tim Walz said he has issued a warning order to the National Guard, which he described as a “heads up” for troops in case they need to activate. The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is working with the FBI to investigate.
  • Community response: Thousands gathered at a vigil for Good last night. Protesters then began marching the streets of South Minneapolis, chanting “F*ck ICE” and “ICE out.” [MPR / Dymanh Chhoun]
  • For parents: Minneapolis Public Schools announced there would be no school today or Friday due to “safety concerns” stemming from the shooting. [MPS]
