Another ICE shooting, this time northside

According to the Department of Homeland Security, federal officers targeted a Venezuelan man in a traffic stop Wednesday evening. The man crashed his car and was fleeing on foot when an officer caught up to him in the Hawthorne neighborhood of north Minneapolis. As the two were struggling on the ground, the Star Tribune reports two family members of the man attacked the officer with shovels. The officer then shot the fleeing man in the leg. • A standoff: Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said at a press conference last night the man fled into a home. A witness told the Star Tribune officers in tactical gear broke down the door. [Star Tribune]
  • Status update: The man and officer who shot him were admitted to the hospital. The two other people who attacked the officer are in custody. [DHS]
  • City leaders respond: “My concern is yet another shooting will take place,” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said at a press conference. He also noted that the number of ICE agents currently far outnumbers Minneapolis police – 3,000 to 600.
  • Residents respond: City Cast Producer Adam Sage was on the scene after the shooting, and he witnessed protesters clashing with law enforcement. O’Hara called it an “unlawful assembly.” Officers deployed chemical irritants and flashbangs against them. Adam got tear-gassed (again).
