🔎 Joint investigation of Alex Pretti shooting

February 9, 2026

Good morning, Twin Cities – Adam here. Do yourself a favor today and look up #Comics4Liam on Instagram. Comic artists around the world are participating in a campaign to protest ICE by drawing cute and positive pictures of Liam Conejo Ramos, the 5-year-old boy who was recently detained and sent to a facility in Texas before being returned home to Minnesota.

Today’s Must-Know

FBI and State Investigators to Announce Joint Investigation into Alex Pretti Shooting

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the FBI are set to announce a joint investigation into the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti. The BCA was previously cut out of the federal investigation following the killing of Renee Macklin Good, and the DOJ is still not investigating the shooter, ICE agent Jonathan Ross. [Star Tribune]

  • Change of tune: Until now, the state and feds have been clashing over access to evidence from the shooting. BCA investigators were barred from entering the scene on the day of the shooting despite having a judicial warrant, and state attorneys have been fighting in the courtroom to get access to the evidence. What the Cities Are Talking About

Dozens arrested at Whipple: Dozens of protesters were arrested at the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building Saturday, exactly one month after Renee Good was killed at the hands of ICE agent Jonathan Ross. The large crowd formed around midday and began throwing bottles and dildos at officers. Arrests were made after protestors threw chunks of ice, hitting an officer and causing property damage, according to a Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post. [Bring Me The News]

Calm down, Jake: Jan. 6 insurrectionist Jake Lang also made an appearance at the Whipple Federal Building this weekend. Lang originally organized a pro-ICE rally at the Capitol for Feb. 7 following his sparsely attended anti-Islam march in downtown Minneapolis a few weeks ago that ended with him being chased out of the area by counterprotesters. But he changed location due to being banned from the State Capitol grounds after he was arrested and charged for damaging a sculpture in front of the Capitol building. Instead, Lang drove by ICE protesters at Whipple in a U-Haul truck. Masked Lang supporters fired paintballs and chemical irritants at protesters who chased the U-Haul. [Star Tribune]

Access denied (again): The Department of Homeland Security denied U.S. Reps. Angie Craig and Betty McCollum access to the Whipple Federal Building on Friday. McCollum said she and Craig were told they were denied due to a 13-person visitor cap, but noted the denial ignores a law that prohibits the barring of members of Congress from conducting oversight of detention centers. Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Kelly Morrison was allowed access, according to the other two representatives. [Minnesota Reformer]

ICE's economic impact: Minneapolis businesses are losing an estimated $10 million to $20 million per week in revenue, with customers and employees wary of coming in amid ICE's continued surge in the Twin Cities. Immigrant-owned businesses in the city's cultural districts are being hit with estimated revenue losses of 80% to 100%, owing to many shutting down completely. [Star Tribune]

'Unsettled' Minnesota: Mexican photographer Xavier Tavera juxtaposes photos of Minnesota's natural landscapes with scenes of community resistance, treating the land as a living archive that has absorbed feelings of grief, fear, and anger. His work is on display at the Cruise Gallery in Minneapolis and is free to visit through April 22. [Sahan Journal]

Get the gold: Several Minnesotans are competing in the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics this week. The Minnesota Frost, our local professional women's hockey team, is sending eight of their players to compete on various countries' teams. [MinnPost]

Expedited deportation: Following the return of Liam Conejo Ramos and his father to Minnesota, the DHS has filed a motion to end the family's asylum claims and expedite deportation proceedings. This comes as President Trump has expressed frustrations over "bad publicity" his administration has received during Operation Metro Surge during an interview with NBC News. [MPR]
