🚫 César Chávez Day repealed

March 30, 2026

Good morning, Twin Cities! Tiffany here. Do you love cats and local parks? Minneapolis Parks and Recreation created a free, downloadable cat calendar superimposed onto park pics. You can also participate in their “March Meow-ness” bracket. 🐱

Today’s Must-Know

“Skeletons out of the closet”

The Legislature (unanimously in both chambers, I might add) passed a repeal of César Chávez Day late last week, after a New York Times investigation surfaced sexual abuse allegations against the civil rights leader. Rep. María Isa Pérez-Vega, who authored a bill in the House to repeal the commemorative day, joins today’s episode. “We deserve to be celebrated as Latinos in the state of Minnesota, and we don’t need to have it attached to a person who has put damage in our community,” she said. “And those skeletons are now out of the closet.” [🎧 City Cast Twin Cities]

  • Condemnation: While some lawmakers denounced Chávez’s abuse of girls and his fellow organizer, Dolores Huerta, I’m curious if that was the primary motivator for others. The Star Tribune reports that Sen. Michael Holmstrom, R-Buffalo, said about César Chávez Day: “For far too long, this state has honored a man whose Marxist ideology and conduct were deeply troubling.” Chávez died in 1993. [Star Tribune]
  • Local impact: St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her has said she is speaking to community members about renaming Cesar Chavez Street on the West Side. Academia Cesar Chavez, a charter school in St. Paul, is also beginning the process to change its name. [Session Daily / Academia Cesar Chavez]

What the Cities Are Talking About

“I did not know him, but I knew he had my back”: A Minneapolis woman seen on video next to Alex Pretti shortly before he was killed spoke out at a press conference last week. Georgia Savageford, who goes by Wynnie, recalls being forcefully pushed to the ground, handcuffed, and thrown headfirst into the back of a car. There, she watched as ICE agents shot and killed Pretti. You can listen to her statement here. [Associated Press]

Cooked with love: Customers of Big E’s Soul Food in Minneapolis are honoring Eric Austin, a.k.a. Chef E, who passed in late February. North News reports he remembered regulars by their dishes and mentored young chefs at Oak Park Center. Chef E’s dishes even brought in big names like Shaquille O’Neal and Angela Basset. [North News]

Payday: The Star Tribune’s Ellie Lin reports WNBA players have a new contract, which means the average player’s salary is about to quintuple. Read the story for projected salary increases for Lynx players. Insert Lucille Bluth of Arrested Development, saying “Good for her” here. [Star Tribune]

No Kings: Producer Adam Sage was at the No Kings Rally on Saturday. Though there were rallies across the country, St. Paul’s was considered the “flagship” protest. Organizers estimate over 200,000 people attended. [City Cast Twin Cities]

Take me out to the ballgame: CHS Field’s new concessions are wild. A six-foot hot dog called “The Land of 10,000 Calories” is making a comeback. You can also get the lite version, which is a measly foot long. Also notable: Burrito Mercado’s Takis Bowls and Dog Park’s SPAM dog. [Pioneer Press]
