⚖️ Twin Cities split on eviction notices
April 6, 2026
Good morning, Twin Cities! It’s Adam today. If you haven't stopped thinking about what was going to happen to the mountain of memorabilia trapped inside Sex World when it closed, today is your lucky day. Their vast collection is up for auction now, with most items ending on Thursday. Items include classic signs, t-shirts, a skeleton in a rocking chair, and basic office supplies. There's something for everyone! [Racket]

Today’s Must-Know

Twin Cities Split on Eviction Notices
The city councils in Minneapolis and St. Paul both recently voted to extend the pre-eviction notice period to 60 days, meaning tenants would have up to 60 days to pay overdue rent before a landlord can file for eviction. Mayor Jacob Frey vetoed the measure in Minneapolis, and Mayor Kaohly Her declined to sign it in St. Paul. However, the measure will still take effect in St. Paul because it passed the council with a veto-proof majority. [Pioneer Press]
- Does a longer notice period help tenants? Yes, according to housing attorney Daniel Suitor. He argues that having more time is one of the most important factors in whether or not people can pay their rent and stay in their homes, especially right now. Suitor says that tenants need time to apply for emergency assistance and to get paychecks after returning to work following Operation Metro Surge. [🎧 City Cast Twin Cities]
- "Haven't you made enough money?" Suitor called on other attorneys in the Twin Cities to do more pro bono work to help the most vulnerable people in our communities. He and many other lawyers have been trained to file habeas corpus petitions for people detained by immigration enforcement in the past several months. [🎧 City Cast Twin Cities]

What the Cities Are Talking About
New life at Annie's Parlour: A new hockey-themed coffee shop called Two for Tripping has opened in the old Annie's Parlour space in Dinkytown. The Director of Operations at Two for Tripping says that for Dinkytown to thrive, it needs to become a destination for all kinds of people in Minneapolis, not just college students and alumni. [Minnesota Daily]
Goodbye, assistant mayor: St. Paul Assistant Mayor Jodi Pfarr has resigned to return to her previous role at the Ramsey County Attorney's office. Mayor Kaohly Her took a new approach to governing the city when she took office, appointing four assistant mayors to oversee different departments. It is not known why Pfarr resigned, and her departments have been temporarily assigned to the other assistant mayors. [Pioneer Press]
Put your phone down: April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and Minnesota law enforcement is taking it seriously. We have a hands-free driving law in Minnesota, meaning you are not allowed to hold your phone while driving (even for directions). Police will be cracking down on hands-free driving violations this month across the state, so be careful out there, folks. Phones down! 🫡 [CBS News]

Unsurprising 💅: Midtown Global Market is in the running to be one of USA Today's 10 Best Public Markets. There's a ton of great food and shops in there – we highlighted Andy's Garage for having the best breakfast tacos in the Twin Cities on Friday's episode of the podcast. [Bring Me The News]
HCMC still at risk: One of the two co-interim administrators of Hennepin Healthcare has stepped down less than three months after being appointed to replace the previous interim CEO, who stepped down in January. Hennepin Healthcare operates HCMC, the large safety net hospital in downtown Minneapolis. HCMC has had to make major cuts to staffing and care due to its financial situation, and is in danger of closing if the state legislature doesn't intervene. [MPR News]
Warrantless raids: Six Minnesotans are suing ICE and the DHS after masked agents broke into their homes without judicial warrants. The lead plaintiffs were home with their daughter when agents smashed their door open with a battering ram. The suit is seeking to block enforcement of a May 2025 memo wherein ICE acting director Todd Lyons instructed agents to enter homes without judicial warrants. [MPR News]
