Todayβs Must-Know

Time Is Almost Up for Minnesota Lawmakers To Act on School Safety
Months after the Annunciation Catholic School shooting, Minnesota Legislators are still at an impasse over how to respond. Republican-led bills focused on school security measures have repeatedly failed to advance, and DFL pushes for gun control measures haven't gone anywhere either. [Pioneer Press]
- Competing priorities: Republicans want to spend more than $100 million on school security grants, anonymous threat reporting systems, disciplinary changes, and mental health resources for public, private, and tribal schools. Democrats support parts of that package, but they take issue with other parts and say it does not address the weapons used in school shootings. Legislators have until a self-imposed deadline of tomorrow to advance this measure out of committee if they hope to pass it into law. [MinnPost]
- What comes next: With the May 18 end of the legislative session looming, there is growing uncertainty that anything will get done in regard to school safety. If lawmakers fail to find any common ground by then, we will have to wait until Jan. 6, 2027 for the next legislative session to begin. [Pioneer Press / Minnesota Legislature]

Thief River Falls hockey wins $20,000 grand prize grant

What the Cities Are Talking About
Frey is 'influential': Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has made TIMEβs 100 Most Influential People of 2026 list following the rapid rise of his national profile during Operation Metro Surge. Critics argue that he did little more than give interviews during the federal occupation, but Frey says it was his job to share ICEβs βhorrific actsβ in hopes that his words reached the federal government while Minneapolis residents did their job of peacefully protesting and delivering food. [Star Tribune]
Steal this coffee: Little Joy Coffee in Northfield has gone viral for their DIY or Buy series on social media, where they share the (often complex) recipes for their popular drinks for viewers to decide if they can make them at home. Since their popular raspberry danish latte isn't DIY friendly, Little Joy offered to give their large batch recipe to any independent coffee shop that wants to add it to their menu. Over 400 coffee shops around the world have started selling the latte so far, including two spots in Minneapolis. [TODAY]
Controversial 'kindness content': St. Paul Parks and Recreation has banned local influencer Josh Liljenquist from all city parks until Oct. 3, alleging that he harassed vulnerable people and profited from videos of himself giving food and supplies to unhoused people on camera. Liljenquist says the city's accusations are untrue, and plans to meet with city officials tomorrow to appeal the decision. (Star Tribune / Bring Me The News)

No way, Foshay: The Foshay building in downtown Minneapolis is facing foreclosure after the owner defaulted on a $51 million mortgage. Keep an eye out β maybe you could buy the building for a shockingly low amount like the downtown Lumber Exchange that recently sold for $1. [Star Tribune]
50 years of WARM: The Women's Art Registry of Minnesota, a feminist arts collective, is celebrating 50 years with an exhibition at the Kickernick Gallery in Minneapolis. The exhibition features work of 73 of WARM's original 90 members, and is open now until June 13. [MPR News]
