🥬 How to not get explosive diarrhea
July 22, 2026 · — Adam
Hey, Twin Cities! It’s Adam today. Join us at Claddagh Coffee in St. Paul at 11 a.m. this Friday for our second-ever live taping of the City Cast Twin Cities podcast! We're going to be buying coffee for you all morning, and in the episode we'll cover St. Paul's impending clearing of homeless encampments, the hipster-ification of the West 7th neighborhood, and we’ll play a rousing game of everyone’s favorite pastime, Hotdish Hushhhhhhh.
We also still need more people to take our audience survey. Can you help us out? Hearing from you will help shape our coverage and outreach in the Twin Cities in the future. We’ve honestly been dying to hear from you about this since we started last fall!
Oh and I forgot to mention – you'll also be entered to win a $250 Visa gift card and some City Cast swag at the end of the survey!

Today’s Must-Know

Is It Safe To Eat Veggies Right Now?
As some states are facing an outbreak of explosive diarrhea, I've largely been ignoring all of that news and hoping for the best – lucky for me (and all of us in Minnesota), that seems like a pretty effective approach for the cyclospora outbreak so far. [🎧 City Cast Twin Cities]
- What's causing the outbreak?: Cyclospora are a parasite that live in water and cause some super unpleasant poops when ingested by people. Cases have been soaring in Michigan and have been linked to fresh produce. If cyclospora is present in the water used to grow produce, it is nearly impossible to simply wash off if the food isn't going to be cooked. [U.S. Centers for Disease Control / 🎧 City Cast Twin Cities]
- How is Minnesota fairing? There have only been 66 reported cases of cyclosporiasis in Minnesota so far this year, which is about the norm. Farmers in Minnesota usually water their crops with groundwater, which is generally safe from any unwanted diarrhea bugs. So as long as you're eating locally-grown, fresh fruits and veggies, you should be safe. [🎧 City Cast Twin Cities]

What the Cities Are Talking About
Thirst trap: The Minnesota State Fair released its list of new drinks for this year, and am I the only one that thinks a ranch dressing-flavored cream ale sounds kind of … awesome? I think the new brew from Dual Citizen will pair perfectly with a slice of pickle pizza. Other new beverages that caught my eye were Surly's Homer Black Pepper IPA, Indeed's Mango Heat lager, and Sociable Cider Werks' Quacker Jack Seltzer – a kettle corn-flavored cider. [MPR News]
Case dismissed: A Trump-appointed federal judge dismissed a lawsuit from the Department of Justice that aimed to invalidate several "sanctuary" laws in Minnesota. The suit targeted several laws that limit the ability of local agencies to collaborate with federal immigration enforcement. Judge Eric C. Tostrud dismissed all of the claims on the grounds that the federal government cannot force state and local authorities to carry out tasks that are the sole responsibility of the federal government. Good news for good brews: The Bauhaus Brew Labs taproom will be reopening in Northeast Minneapolis. St. Paul alcohol-adjustment tech startup ABV Labs announced that they will be acquiring the Bauhaus brand and resuming operations with familiar favorites as well as some new THC infusions, zero-alcohol, and lowered-alcohol beverages. A date for the reopening has not been set yet. [City Cast Twin Cities]
Clearing the record: Three years after recreational cannabis was legalized in Minnesota, the Cannabis Expungement Board is finally reviewing nearly 98,000 felony cases. The 2023 Adult-Use Cannabis Act called for automatic expungement of low-level cannabis misdemeanors, but felonies still need to be manually reviewed by the CEB. The board wants Minnesotans to know that they don't need a lawyer to get their felony convictions vacated, and its attorneys are already working through cases. [Spokesman-Recorder]
