🌽 CornSlam, Panda Fest, farmer’s market ride
July 31, 2026 · — Tiffany
Good morning, Twin Cities! Tiffany here. If you’re looking to take advantage of below 90-degree weather this weekend, there’s plenty to do. You can start your Saturday morning with a bike ride to four Minneapolis farmers markets. Broken Clock Brewing is hosting CornSlam, featuring live wrestling and “corn-themed” vendors. On Sunday, Panda Fest returns to the MOA’s North Lot; last year, I enjoyed sipping on sugarcane juice while eating tanghulu, a Chinese snack of candied fruits.

What the Cities Are Talking About
‘Attempts at humor’: Amid allegations of sexual harassment, notably by her police chief, St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her says she won’t resign, and admitted that “some of my attempts at humor fell short of the standard I expect of myself.” The allegations come at a fraught time, as Her prepares to close major homeless encampments and faces a historic city budget deficit. After 1 a.m.: Racket has a dispatch from Uptown’s nightlife, which is still reeling from four shootings this month. The owner of Mortimer’s reports they’ve lost band bookings and canceled events over safety concerns. What’s to blame for a nightlife scene that used to be relatively safe? Perhaps the uneven housing-to-retail ratio, under 21-year-olds making dumb and dangerous decisions, absentee landlords, and lack of laws regulating said landlords. [Racket]
New laws, who dis: Starting Saturday, your grandparents can crack open a cold one at the retirement home, and you have to be 21 to buy Kratom. A bevy of new legislation goes into effect soon, including increased penalties for impersonating a cop after Vance Boelter murdered Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, and injured Sen. John Hoffman and his wife. [MPR News]

Model tree: The Union Depot seeks evergreen tree donations of the “tall and good-looking” kind. The chosen tree will be the star of their “Hub for the Holidays” celebration. If that pine in your backyard is a winner, they’ll cut it down for free. Must be located in Ramsey County. [Pioneer Press]
Wait, and wait some more: Neighbors in Minneapolis’ Camden neighborhood regularly face delays of 15 minutes or more thanks to the Humboldt Yard railroad crossings. These blockages have even slowed emergency responders. A $2.5 million study, funded mostly by the federal government with some support from the city and railroad company, will look for solutions. [MinnPost]
‘Til the cows come home: I remember rolling the dice for housing at the University of Minnesota, and praying that I wasn’t relegated to the far-off St. Paul residence hall. Well, for good or bad, no students will be staying at Bailey Hall this coming school year. The university announced it would be closing the dorm as part of its efforts to “revitalize” housing on their St. Paul campus. It’s just the cows (and various other farm animals) sleeping out there now. [Bring Me The News]

Your Friday Floof is Tinker Belle, a “sun-soaked diva.” Owner Todd A. says she has “expertly trained my wife to open cat food cans, doors, and turn on her beloved butterfly machine. She graces my lap with snuggles, sleeps on top of my wife like a furry paperweight, and – after careful study – has decided I’m safe and comfortable but completely untrainable.”
We want to see your floofs! Submit them here to be featured in a future newsletter.
