👥 Things still aren't 'normal' on Lake Street

August 31, 2026 · — Adam

Hi, Twin Cities! It’s Adam today. Have you made it to the State Fair yet? If not, I wanted to shout out one of my favorite quick sights to see – the giant pumpkins in the Agriculture Horticulture Building! Every year, farmers and hobbyists around the state compete to see who can grow the largest pumpkin (or other vegetable), and the results are surreal to see up close.

What the Cities Are Talking About

‘Meeting the moment’: Minneapolis Public Housing Authority approved $6 million for repairs to Heritage Park, after public backlash to poor living conditions at the complex. Thirty-two of 128 public housing units have requested to be moved. The funding is being pulled from other projects, which will mean delays at other MPHA developments. [Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder]

No shirt, no shoes: The Minneapolis City Council passed an ordinance requiring businesses with dress codes to clearly post them outside. Advocates want to prevent “velvet-rope discrimination,” whereby businesses deny patrons entry based on assumptions about legally-protected characteristics. [KSTP]

Not over: The Lake Street Council’s campaign to bring more business to the area during Operation Metro Surge has come to a close. The “You Belong Here” cash mobs brought an influx of new customers, but business owners say things aren’t back to normal. Aside from a $7 million Minneapolis grant for all small businesses, most support for Lake Street has come from mutual aid. [Sahan Journal]

Rock's worst lyrics, reclaimed: It can really be a bummer to actually pay attention to the lyrics of famous classic rock tunes and realize how problematic they are (looking at you, Abba 😔). But not on September 12! Head to the Parkway Theater to see Do Re #MeToo, where some of the most talented femme performers in the Twin Cities belt out some of the most horrifically sexist rock songs that have shaped the zeitgeist, all in the name of raising money for abortion access. On today's episode of the podcast, DJ Tricky Miki talks about how she picks a different sexist Rolling Stones song to perform every year. [🎧 City Cast Twin Cities]

More surveillance secrets? Following recent reports of federal agents spying on unions, left-wing organizations, and protesters as a part of "Operation Puppet Master," a federal judge is considering whether to force the government to hand over more information regarding their surveillance tactics. Defense attorneys for the 15 protesters charged with conspiracy hope that more evidence could reveal if the prosecutions of the Minnesota 15 were politically motivated or designed to chill expressions of free speech. Free music at the fair: The free concerts at the Fair are giving the Grandstand some competition, with heavy hitters like Durry, The Sugarhill Gang, and The Minnesota Orchestra putting on performances free to all attendees. Check out our recent interview with Nate Dungan, who has been booking the State Fair's free stages for 20 years, for some great insider recommendations (starting about 31 minutes into the episode). Congratulations to City Cast Neighbor Amber L. for winning a ribbon at the State Fair for her beautiful crop art! Amber's artwork employs grains to portray one of the photos taken by the Artemis astronauts during their lunar flyby earlier this year. Do you have any art on display at the Fair this year? Send it my way!

I also want to give a big thank you and welcome to our newest Neighbor, David P.! If you want to get ad-free listening to our podcast, bonus content, and invites to members-only events like David now does, you can learn more and sign up here.
